Migraine in Primary Care Advisors

MIPCA Projects

Diagnostic checklist study

This investigation validated a novel 8-item Headache Diagnostic Screening Questionnaire (DSQ) developed by MIPCA and the Migraine Action Association (MAA). This is designed to be an initial screen for headache sufferers to be completed when they first seek medical help, with a GP, pharmacist or other practitioner. Data were compared from completions of the questionnaire by patients and pharmacists with conventional pharmacist and GP diagnoses and the gold standard of diagnosis by a headache specialist.

The primary endpoint was the sensitivity of the DSQ, measured as the proportion of correct diagnoses assessed from the patient, pharmacist and GP responses, compared with the gold standard of specialist diagnosis, for each headache subtype identified. This study is now complete and a manuscript is in preparation. The investigation was sponsored in part by an educational grant from AstraZeneca.
